The construction of the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées & SPA began with the Unification of Italy.
At that time Stresa was not yet known as the "Pearl" of Verbano; it will become so only from the beginning of the twentieth century, when it will impose itself as the most prestigious resort on Lake Maggiore.
The huts were located close to the first buttresses of the Mottarone, while near the shores of the lake, now dotted with villas and hotels, meadows, fields and some vineyards took place.
