Honeywell Solstice® N41 (R-466A) Nonflammable Refrigerant Receives Inert Gas Registration From Japanese HVAC Governing Body

Japan Society of Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (JSRAE) recognizes low-global-warming-potential solution as an inert refrigerant.

MORRIS PLAINS, N.J., April 7, 2021 -- Honeywell today announced that its Solstice N41 (R-466A) low-global-warming-potential (GWP) refrigerant was recognized by the Japan Society of Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (JSRAE) as a “new inert refrigerant.” Solstice N41 is the HVAC industry’s first non-flammable R-410A replacement refrigerant for stationary air conditioning applications. Completion of JSRAE registration demonstrates compliance with the organization’s guidelines.

In 2019, the American Society for Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) approved Solstice N41 as an A1 (no flame propagation, lower toxicity) refrigerant. JSRAE’s accreditation provides additional support for Solstice N41’s adoption and use. In developing this solution, Honeywell scientists devoted years of research and development to solve a key problem facing the HVAC industry—compliance with critical regulatory phasedowns of high-GWP solutions by replacing R-410A with a safe, energy-efficient, low-GWP alternative that offers similar or better performance.

With a 65 percent lower GWP , and a 100% match in performance (capacity and energy efficiency) versus R-410A, Solstice N41 is the first replacement refrigerant that delivers all three attributes, and provides the same level of safety to contractors and customers as R-410A. All other alternatives proposed to date as R-410A replacements are flammable, which increases risk to endusers and installers. It also requires cumbersome changes to safety standards and building codes and OEM equipment production lines.

“Solstice N41 is a safe and economical solution for original equipment manufacturers in Japan and around the world who are seeking to replace R-410A with an energy-efficient solution that is safe for the environment, without sacrificing performance,” said Chris LaPietra, vice president and general manager, Honeywell Stationary Refrigerants. “We specifically developed Solstice N41 to address the many regulatory and safety issues facing the industry, and its recognition by JSRAE will enable further global development as we move towards commercializing this solution.”

Solstice N41 is currently being extensively tested by over 15 OEMs and leading compressor manufacturers, including OEMs in Japan. It has accumulated more than 100,000 hours of testing in different applications such as commercial AC (VRF, rooftops) and residential AC (unitary ducted equipment in the USA). In Japan, the JSRAE designation is a key milestone for VRF OEMs to phase down HFCs in these applications.

The Japan Society of Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (JSRAE) was founded as the Japanese Association of Refrigeration, JAR, in 1925 in order to develop and disseminate refrigerating and freezing technology and related scientific technologies. Since then it has served nearly 80 years as a non-profit academic organization in a field of refrigeration, air conditioning, food refrigeration and related science and technology in Japan.

Honeywell is a world leader in the development, manufacture and supply of refrigerants that are sold worldwide under the Solstice® and Genetron® brand names for a range of applications, including refrigeration and building and automobile air conditioning.  Honeywell and its suppliers have completed a  billion dollar investment program in research and development, and new capacity based on Honeywell’s hydrofluorolefin technology. Worldwide adoption of Solstice products have resulted in the reduction of more than 210 million metric tons of greenhouse gases to date, equal to eliminating emissions from more than 44 million cars.
